Westside Story

Westside Select is a grade-based basketball club whose home is the Westside Baptist Church in Lewisville, Texas. Born in 2003, the club currently sports a 2012 and 2013 girls’ teams as well as a 2012 boys’ team. Players come from Dallas, DeSoto, Flower Mound, Frisco, Keller, North Richland Hills, Lewisville, Mesquite, Plano, South Grand Prairie, and Southlake.

History…

The Westside Boys team was organized by Ray Mickens in 2003. The Girls program was established by Coach Mickens and Coach Vaughn Deary in 2005 and re-structured into two teams in Fall 2006.

The boys won their first national championship in 2006 at the Vision Sports MainEvent Platinum Tournament in Las Vegas and qualified for back-to-back for AAU National Championship tournaments.

In their two seasons of play, the 2012 Girls accomplishments include a 5th place finish at the 2008 13u AAU National Championship, the 2008 MAYB National Championship in the eighth grade division and the 2007 Prime Time National Championship in the seventh grade division. They also finished second in the 7th grade division at the 2007 AAU grade based.

In their two seasons playing together, the 2013 Girls won the 2007 Basketball Congress International National 12u Championship, the 2008 Southwest AAU Championship, finished seventh at the 2008 12u AAU National Championship and fifth at the 2008 MAYB National Championship.

Mission…

Westside Select strives to produce well-rounded, socially responsible, spiritual young ladies and gentlemen who are also fundamentally sound basketball players.
Off the court, players must maintain at least a “B” average in the classroom and must complete at least two community service projects every school year.

On the court, players must understand the basic fundamentals of basketball and be committed to constantly improving their skills. They must display good sportsmanship and always show respect for their coaches and teammates as well as their opponents and game officials.

Coaches Mickens and Deary as well as Coaches Andre Cross and Jared Holbert, who work with the 2012 Girls, strive to instill discipline, a hard work ethic, commitment, teamwork, communication and respect. Those are the same values that allowed the 5-8, 180-pound Mickens to thrive as a cornerback at Texas A&M and for 11 seasons with the NFL’s New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

Goal…

To build on established success by making incremental individual improvements at each practice which translate to monumental team improvements each game. Just as important is each player’s commitment to education and continued personal growth away from the court.
